John.A.Pescud was a travelling salesman of a glass company. He is not a particularly good looking man. He is bald with a wide smile. Pescud believes that a man should marry a girl from his own background. He hates best sellers and criticises them for being unrealistic. Ironically, when we come to know about how he met his wife, Jessie, we are forced to think that he is a cynic and a hypocrite. He believed that a person should marry another person only if both come from the same background. However, inspite of being from the working class, he dared to propose to a beautiful lady belonging to an aristocratic family. In short, we realise that Pescud's life itself is a best seller.
