In hydrology, a water balance equation can be used to describe the flow of water in and out of a system. A system can be one of several hydrological domains, such as a column of soil or a drainage basin.[citation needed] Water balance can also refer to the ways in which an organism maintains water in dry or hot conditions. It is often discussed in reference to plants or arthropods, which have a variety of water retention mechanisms, including a lipid waxy coating that has limited permeability.

The phenomena is called water cycle

EVAPORATION--The Sun, which drives the water cycle, heats water in oceans and seas. Water evaporates as water vapour into the air

CONDENSATION--When the water vapour rises, it starts cooling. The water vapour condenses causing the formation of droplets of water

PRECIPITATION-Clouds are just masses of such water droplets. When these droplets of water become too heavy to float in air, they come down as precipitation

EASY TRICK TO REMEMBER : Just like a  wheel of a cycle rotates and comes to it's initial position the  amount of water on the earth remains constant with the water cycle !!
