Carll WendellHines' Jazz Poem is about a Jazz musician, in the present world, he had neither interest nor enthusiasm. He had a pathetic character, but he was the leading artist. He had the ability to get people to listen. It was a gift. He spoke silently and in music he was eloquent. He was very good at musically expressing his thoughts.

Explanation:

  • The jazz player looks pitiful. He's had a wrinkled face and his eyes closed with concerns. He had no life interest.  He turned his head down, his eyes closed. He was wearing an old blue faded shirt.
  • The shirt was dirty black, the tie ripped. The jacket was an ancient one and couldn't hold his sagging (hanging) stomach..He cannot afford to buy new shoes so he wears old shoes in which he has stuffed paper in order to feel comfortable He didn't shake his hand. In every wrinkle of his face  one could see the pain
  • The Jazz player is nevertheless proud of his race. He's proud of being a Black guy. However, the jazz player is showing himself to be a poor man, full of pain and anxiety at the beginning of the poem. Later on, we understand that when we saw him playing saxophone, he is a man who knows that he was sent to preach, to deliver a religious message in this country. .He is to preach the Black Gospel of Jazz.
  • He began preaching with the saxophone music and realized that he was not a black man, but a bird that soared with the music and its notes higher and higher. But once music finishes, he's back to the truth. He feels he's back to his poor lives as the same black man..
