The velds name was given by the Dutch settlers before South Africa was colonised by the British.
The temperature grassland of South Africa are called the velds.
velds are the rolling plateaus with varying heights ranging from 600m to 1100m.
it is bound by the Drakensburg Mountains on the east.
To its west lies the Kalahari desert.
On the northernwest part , ''high velds '' are located that attain a height of more than 1600m, in some places.
