Poet's use of irony in the poem,a river:
- In this poem, the poet A.K.Ramanujan the poet tells about a river that flows in Madurai.
- There are two contrasting things about the river. One is in summer, when the river is dry and the other is the river is flooded with fury when it has full flow of water.
- In the summer, the river is dry and arid. A very little water flows in the stream. It reveals the sand and looks like ribs of a man.
- While in the monsoon season, the river flows beautifully ans majestically with immense water. It has the power of destruction.
- He says that both the old and new poets describes the beauty of the flooded river.
- But, they never talk about the destruction caused by the monstrous flood in the river.
- They were not sympathetic about the human suffering caused by the flooded river.
- Madurai is an ironic reference here. It is considered decadence by him which was considered as the home for Tamilian culture by others.
- In summer, when the water dries he can able to see straws and women hairs that chokes the gates of the dam. The gates of the dam are rusty.
- The irony is used as a provoking piece here.
