☆ On 5 May 1789, Lious XVI called together an assembly of the Estates General to pass proposals for new taxes.
- The first and second estate sent 300 representatives each, who were seated in rows facing each other and 600 members of the 3rd estate stand at back.
- Members of the 3rd estate demanded hat voting now be conducted by the assembly as a whole, where each member should have one vote.
- When king rejected the proposal, members if the 3rd estate walks out of the assembly in protest.

- On 20 June, they assembled in the hall of an indoor tennis court in the grounds if Versailles.
- They declared themselves as National Assembly.

- Faced with the power of revolting subjects, Lious XVI finally accorded recognition to National Assembly and accepted that his powers will now onwards be checked by a constitution.
