Answer:

There was no India at that point of time - only fragmented kingdoms with no concept of a Nation or unity based on Religion. To some extend, the condition has not changed even today as the concept of Nationalism has never been in our culture. Only kings were there and the common man accepted any one victorious as king and becomes the ruler and whatever respect was shown to the previous king was extended to the new king also. Only Kshatriyas were supposed to be in matters of Ruling the area and other caste people showed interest only in their own caste profession. Caste system once upon a time worked well as for the Area it was like division of Labor. To day that is why we have uncrowned political kings throughout. So it was very easy for a foreign Invader to annex one by one all the kingdoms and start ruling the entire Area. Waves after waves of Muslim Invasions took place, destroying temples and forcibly at sword point converting people, which was of little concern for kings and people in the nearby areas and they never had the wisdom of knowing that next was these peoples area. Hindus do not believe in Pan Hinduism and there were different perception of Hinduism among different Regions. There are Hindus in Tamil Nadu and at UP metc. without much similarity with regard to Gods and ways of worship. Unlike Islam Hinduism does not have a codified procedure and hence no unity but only difference which in turn promotes feeling of superiority over other Hindus.

This phenomenon exists even today. Our democracy [or demnocracy] creates motivation only to capture power and become ruling party at whatever cost like championing Minority interests to get their votes in the back ground that Hindus can never become vote bank like Minority votes . The situation in India is such that it does not provide a platform for Nationalism and therefore India is very weak compared to Pakistan who have unity at least based on Religion and self conceived threat from a Non Muslim Group.
