a. India is a linguistically diverse country and is often described as babble of tongue.
b. The country in order to maintain its unity intact, has followed a unique language policy, to present the possible disintegration of the country and has given due recognition to varied languages.
c. The constitution makers did realise the importance of Hindi, as the language is spoken by 40% of Indians, but the fear of balkanisation, of conflict by the non hindi speaking states made them adopt English as the link language, to be used for official purposes
d. Indian Constitution did not give the status of national language to any one language, andallows for the joint use of English and Hindi for official purposes.
e.  Besides Hindi, there are 21 other languages recognised as Scheduled Languages by the Constitution.
f. Constitution thus,  regards Hindi as the official language of the Union.
