During a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon, making it dark. To be accurate, the Moon passes through the ‘umbra’ region of the shadow of the Earth.

In a nut-shell, the Earth simply blocks the sunlight from reaching the Moon.

Earth is closer to the sun, the Moon stands away and hidden from the sunlight for some time. All remains in their orbit.

Earth, Moon and Sun aligns in a straight line.
