The activities performed by the election commission is the counting of votes after the election. This is done under the supervision of Returning officers and observers. After the counting of votes is complete, the Returning Officer declares the name of the candidate who has received the largest number of votes, as the winner.

The Election Commission of India conducts elections to the Parliament of India and that to the State Assemblies of all states and the two union territories of Delhi and Puducherry.
After the elections are over, ballot boxes are taken from all polling booths to the respective counting centres. The votes are then counted in the presence of returning officers, election observers and representatives of candidates. Sometimes, a recounting may be necessary if objections are raised by any candidate's representative or if the observers and returning officers feel so. After counting is over, the winning candidate is handed a certificate by the returning officer of the constituency.
The ECI takes a similar action for all constituencies that had gone to the polls. Simultaneous to the handing over of the certificates to winning candidates, it also declares the results of the poll to the media and general public by issuing suitable notifications in this regard.
In the states, elections to the local bodies like municipalities and corporations are conducted by the state election commissions and after the polls similar activities as above are undertaken.
