→ Versailles treaty: The Versailles Peace Treaty at the end of the First World War dispossessed Germany of its territories, its resources and its pride as a nation. He also had to pay 6 billion pounds as war compensation. In spite of the harsh terms, the Weimar Republic accepted the humiliating treaty, thereby making it unpopular amongst the German masses.
The problems faced by the Weimar Republic:
1. The treaty of Versailles- Many Germans held the new republic responsible not only for the defeat of Germany in World War 1 but also for the national humiliation at Versailles.
2. Economic crises- The Weimar was financially crippled by the war compensation impose on Germany.
3. Economic reforms- In 1923, the German government retaliated against the French occupation of Ruhr industrial area, by printing of enormous paper currency notes.
4. The great economic depression- The US withdrawal of loans led the situations worsen in Germany. About 6 million people lost their jobs and inflation became very high.
5. Political instability- The system of proportional representation made achieving a majority near impossible in Germany. Article 48 gave the president the powers to impose emergency.
