Italy was earlier divided into 7states

1) The Sardinia Piedmont was ruled by Italian crown prince.The north was under the Austrian-Habsburg Empire, the centre was called Papal state and the south was under bourbon kings of Spain.
2)  After failure of revolts by Guiseppe Mazzini the responsibility of unification of Italy fell on the Sardinia-Piedmont.
3) The chief minister of Italy Cavour took the process of unification of Italy.
4) He made a tactful diplomatic alliance with France and defeated the Austrian force in the northern
5) He was joined by Guiseppe Garibaldi who marched to southern Italy, gained support from local inhabitants and successfully drived away the Bourbon rulers.
6) Italy was unified and Victor Emmanuel II was declared the King of unified Italy.
