Carding, in textile production, a process of separating individual fibres, using a series of dividing and redividing steps, that causes many of the fibres to lie parallel to one another while also removing most of the remaining impurities.

This is achieved by passing the fibres between differentially moving surfaces covered with card clothing. It breaks up locks and unorganised clumps of fibre and then aligns the individual fibres to be parallel with each other. In preparing wool fibre for spinning, carding is the step that comes after teasing.
At certain step of producing yarn from cotton, linen wool etc carding is operated. Carding is a process by which dust, other dirt and smaller fibers are discarded. As a result carding of fiber is necessary.
