in humans digestion starts from the mouth. as food enters the mouth teeths chew the food and saliva softens the food this converts the food into a soft substance called chyme.chyme then travels through the oesophagus down to the stomach through peristalsis movements in food pipe. in the stomach hydrochloric acid, pepsinogen and several other gastic juices are secreted. hcl kills the pathogen in the food and activates pepsinogen to pepsin which helps in digestion of protiens. the the food is transferred to duodenum, first part of the small intestine. here liver secretes bile juices to neutralize the food and break down fat molecules into smaller molecules or emulsification occurs , the pancreas secrete pancreatic juice in the small intestine. the walls of small intestine contains small finger like projections called villi. these greatly increase the area for absorption in small intestine.in small intestine the food is absorbed by villi.and then food passes through large intestine and roughage and most of the other undigested food is digested in it. and the other undigested food is excreted out.

The mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract. In fact, digestion starts here as soon as you take the first bite of a meal. Chewing breaks the food into pieces that are more easily digested, while saliva mixes with food to begin the process of breaking it down into a form your body can absorb and use.

Also called the pharynx, the throat is the next destination for food you've eaten. From here, food travels to the esophagus or swallowing tube.

Esophagus

The esophagus is a muscular tube extending from the pharynx to the stomach. By means of a series of contractions, called peristalsis, the esophagus delivers food to the stomach. Just before the connection to the stomach there is a "zone of high pressure," called the lower esophageal sphincter; this is a "valve" meant to keep food from passing backwards into the esophagus.
