Election campaign process:

Candidates meet the people in their constituencies to ask for votes, to publicize their own and their party policies. They give a lot of gifts and make a lot of promises to make their people's lives better. They promise to solve their people's problems if they come to power.   They make a manifesto that mentions what their intentions are and what their promises are.

Candidates organize meetings, public gatherings and make speeches. Also big leaders from state or country capital are also invited.

Candidates go to the houses of people and explain their policies and seek support. Candidates also make processions on the roads by walk or by vehicles.  They or their parties make a lot of pamphlets, papers, brochures and posters. They broadcast their campaign on the radio or TV too. They use social media, print media too for publicity.

The candidates are not supposed to use the means of caste, religion and racism for the campaign. They are supposed to stop campaigning 48 hours before election begins. They are not supposed to threaten or pressurize people to vote for them. They are not supposed to offer money or transport or other favours, to turn the voters in their favour.

They need to take permission from the police to take out processions and to conduct meetings as they need protection, or police wants to ensure security and safety.

The candidates cannot use the government resources for the campaign purposes. The candidates are not supposed to spend more than 25 lakhs for election to the parliament or 10 lakhs for an assembly.  The campaign process must be according to the code of conduct enforced by the CEC. If not their election or candidature is cancelled.

An election campaign is the public campaign that is undertaken by a candidate after his/her application to contest in elections is accepted by the election commission.
A campaign involves reaching out the voters directly and indirectly.

The importance of Election Campaign can be understood with following points:
A candidate may directly reach out to the voters through election rallies and road shows.
Mass media like television and radio are utilised for this purpose. In modern age, the Internet and social media are also being used for the same.
A candidate tries to draw the attention of voters to local and national issues and outlines his/her party's position on them.
Candidates have to ensure that their point of view is received by the voters and their solution to the issues are given weightage.
