Electrolytic refining is the process of refining impure metals by using electricity. In this process impure metal is made as the anode and a strip of pure metal is made the cathode. A solution of a soluble salt of the same metal is taken as the electrolyte. Example- Copper can be purified by this way.

as there are three parts of electrolytic refining anode cathode electrolyte take substance to be refined at cathode and its pure form at anode now take a solution of the substance . connect + wire to anode and - to cathode of battery. now allow electricity to pass through it . u'll notice that impurities are settling down and pure form is platting on the anode . The down impurities are called sludge.
