Thermite is the chemical that is used in welding of railway tracks. It is normally a mixture of iron oxide and aluminium metal. Due to the exothermic nature the reaction, iron is obtianed in molten form and can be used for welding of the railway tracks.

we use 1 compound(Fe2O3) and one element(Al) for this in which the highly reactive metal displace low reactive metal oxide and form oxide(Al2o3) which helps to make the tracks strong end to end....

example. ... Al + Fe2O3 -----: Al2O3 + Fe
