Photosynthesis:-

  • The process by which plants make their own food with the help of water from soil and carbon dioxide from air in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll is called Photosynthesis.

Explanation:-

The word photo means "light" and the word synthesis means "putting together".

The essential ingredients are collected from the plants from its surroundings.

  • Water and minerals:- The root system in the plants helps in absorption of water and minerals from soil.

  • Light:- the green pigment in the leaves, helps in the absorption of sunlight. It (chlorophyll) absorbs sunlight and converts into chemical energy, which is then used to prepare food.

  • Carbon dioxide:- The leaves of plants absorb carbon dioxide from atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is absorbed through minute openings on the underside of the leaves called as stomata. They are surrounded by bean-shaped guard cells on either side.

Importance of Photosynthesis:-

  • Oxygen which is essential for the survival of all living organisms is produced during the process of Photosynthesis.

  • All the animals depend in plants for their food, directly or indirectly.

  • Photosynthesis enables green plants to prepare their own food which they use for the growth and survival. The extra food gets stored in the form of starch in different parts of the plant.
