Soap is sodium or potassium salt of long chain fatty acids. It has 2 parts -
hydrophillic - it is the ionic part which dissolves in water
hydrophobic - it the hydrocarbon chain which dissolves in dirt and grease.
When soap is added to water containing sorry cloth , the molecules of the soap align itself in such a way that the hydrophobic end lies inside the dirt and the hydrophillic end lies outside it in the water. This alignment is achieved by cluster formation and this called micelle formation. Due to the force of ionic part and water the clusters of dirt remain in water as a colloidal solution .When we agitate the cloth these clusters leave the cloth. This is how dirt is removed.
