When a cell is put in a strong salt solution,it shrinks because of the variations in concentration of the both. The water in cell goes out to the salt solution due to the variations in concentration and the cell shrinks. And this process is called osmosis. The movement of solvent from higher concentration to lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane is called osmosis.
