After fertilization, zygote travels down from the oviducts and undergoes cell division forming a cluster of cells. These cells then begin to form groups and then tissues and finally develop into organs. This developing structure is called as embryo.
The embryo reaches the uterus and gets embedded in the uterine wall, where it develops further. The group of cells in embryo change in size and develop into particular cell types such as nerve cells , blood cells , and muscle cells. This is known as cell differentiation.
When the different body parts of the embryo such as legs , hands head can be recognized it is called a foetus. It is formed after 8 weeks of fertilization. In humans, time period of development of foetus is around 9 months. This period is called gestation.
