Insulin is produced in the laboratory by using the recombinant DNA technology. Part of DNA that encodes the production of insulin is cut with the help of an enzyme called restriction endonuclease. The DNA is then introduced into the plasmid which is also cut with the same restriction enzyme. Plasmid is the genetic material of the bacteria. The plasmid into which foreign DNA has been introduced is placed in the Escherichia coli and incubated. The bacteria are then allowed to replicate and grow. It results in the production of million copies of the bacteria and insulin which is then extracted from it.
