Otto Van Bismarck, the chief minister of Prussia carried out the process of unification with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. Bismarck was convinced that the unification of Germany could only be achieved by the princes, and not by the people. He wanted to achieve his aim by merging Prussia into Germany.

The major points are:-

1. Nationalist feelings were widespread among middle class among middle-class Germans, who in 1848 tried to unite the different regions of the German confideration into a nation state.

2. Prussia took on the leadership of the movement for national unification. Its chief minister Otto Von Bismark was the architect of this process.

3. He carried the movement with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy.

4. Wars with Austria, Denmark and France over seven years ended with Prussian victory and completed the process of unification.

5. On 18th January 1871 , an assembly comprising the princes of the German states, representatives of the army, important Prussian ministers including the chief minister Otto Von Bismarck gathered in the palace of Versallies to proclaim the new German Empire headed by Kaiser William I of Prussia.
