Unification of Italy:

  • During the mid 19th century, Italy was divided into 7 states. Out of these only 1 state called ‘Sardinia Piedmont’ was ruled by the Italian Princely house.
  • Victor Emanuel - 2 took the responsibility of unifying states through war. He was supported by Cavour and Garibaldi.
  • Cavour tactfully took help of France to defeat the Austrian Habsburgs Forces and free Northern Italy.
  • Garibaldi's armed volunteers marched into South Italy and Kingdom of Two Sicilies. They took the support of local peasants to drive away the Spanish rulers.
  • In March 1860, Central Italian states of Tuscany, Modena, Parma, Papal and Rome were united with Sardinia Piedmont state.
