Non-Metallic oxides react with bases to give salts and water. Here metal in base reacts with carbon dioxide to form a salt. Hydrogen adds with oxygen in non- metal oxide to form water. This is similar to neutralisation reaction so non metallic oxides are acidic in nature.

Metallic oxides are generally basic is nature. So metallic oxides react with acids to give out salt along with water

Example: CaO + 2HCl ==> CaCl₂ + H₂O

Non-metallic oxides are generally acidic is nature. So metallic oxides react with bases to give out salt along with water

Example: CO₂ + 2NaOH ==> Na₂CO₃ + H₂O
