The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religious and social causes. A mutiny in several sepoy companies of the Bengal army was sparked by the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle February, 1857. A rumor was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and pig fat.

The britishers had put cow fat and pig fat in the bullets of guns and rifles. Hindus thought cow as God and the Muslims thought the pigs as unclean. So the Indians had become very angry. This led to the Revolt of 1857.
