Reason for population growth in post independent India
Explanation:
- The population increase since Indian independence can be traced to two major factors. Immediately after independence, social reform was pushed forward by Prime Minister Nehru, part of this shift was further emphasis on building hospitals and education facilities. The second was a deliberate attempt to increase food production. Medicines also were more readily available and were funded by the Government of India.
- This significantly cut down on childhood disease and infections. Massive programs were launched to combat Tuberculosis, Polio, and leprosy. In the 1960’s India’s food production started increasing and after the Green Revolution in the 1970s, India was became a food exporter for the first time since British Colonialism destroyed the India’s agricultural sector post 1757. The Indian population of India had thus grown nearly 400 per cent since 1947.
