Answer:
What was the reason for the defeat of the Marathas by the British?
After defeating The Nawab of Bengal Siraj ud daulah in Battle of Palassey, 1757, the EIC collected more than 30 million rupees from the puppet Nawab Mir Zafar, which would be enough money to fight against native powers.
Mir zafar soon allied himself with Shuja ud Daulah of Awadh and Mughal emperor Shah Alam II but their alliance was defeated at Battle of Buxar. Awadh was annexed beside Bengal .
Meanwhile the Maratha power received a huge blow in Third battle of Panipat. But they recovered soon under the leadership of Peshwa Madhav Rao , Nana Phadnavis and Mahadji Shinde.
The British not so powerful yet tried to favor one native power against another. In 1776 they joined The Nizam of Hyderabad against Mysore and later allied with Marathas to crush the power of Tipu. In 1784 Mysore was defeated and annexed and subsidiary alliance was signed with Nizam of Hyderabad leaving only Marathas and Sikhs the two most important power in the subcontinent.
But misfortune was upon Marathas , the young peshwa Madhav Rao died and there was contest among marathas for the seat of Peshwa , Raghunath Rao went to the British to help him become the Peshwa, this gave them an opportunity to Attack the Marathas. But Maratha power was strong under able ministers like Nana Phadwanis and Mahadji shinde and the British were defeated in First Anglo Maratha war( 1775–1782)..........
