Describe the Reform Movement in Maharashtra

Movement of 19th century where Maharashtra was mixed result of Indian reformation of traditions and international education.  

Effect of international education was evident on educated people of Bombay and Pune.  

Mass movement was carried by leaders inspired by traditions of saints like Dnyaneshwar, Eknath, Chakradhar, Tukaram.

19th century Maharashtrian reformists tried examining critically their social system and religious beliefs and shows priority to social reform as against political freedom.  

Their reform efforts had to contend with stiff opposition from conservatives.  

Reformists as Balshastri Jambhekar condemned evil customs of sati and female infanticide, Gopal Hari Deshmukh by shatpatre attacked orthodox Brahmins objecting social and religious reforms and Govindrao Phule revolted against caste system and showed cause of untouchables and education of backward womans.

Bhandarkar and Ranade who was pioneers of "Prarthana Samaj" trust for general, social and religious reforms.  

Gopal Ganesh Agarkar gave priority to social reform.  

Dhondo Keshav Karve devoted his life to cause of women's education and Behramji Malabari Parsi of Bombay started 'Seva Sadan' for care of women.

Pandita Ramabai opened "Sharada Sadan" for helping high-class widows.  

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule started Satyashodhak Samaj and Vitthal Ramji Shinde fought for eradication of untouchability through his Depressed Classes Mission.
