it was the period when robespeirre followed the policy of severe control and punishment.anyone who he saw as being the enemy of republic was arrested , imprisoned and tried by a revolutionary tribunal. moreover bread and meat were rationed. peasants and farmers were forced to sell the food grains at the prices fixed by the govt. buildings of church were converted into barracks. instead of traditional words sir and madam , all French people were forced to use the word citizen.
