Rukmani is a miserable old woman and a victim of partition in the story. Mulk Raj Anand’s “The Parrot in the Cage” is the depiction of conflict, isolation, misery, struggle, and hopelessness, and all these are represented through the central character of the story ‘Rukmani’.

An old woman, Rukmani suffers in her life after the partition. Her life is miserable and she relies on others for her survival but she doesn’t get the desired support from the people around her all the time.

She feels insufficient from the inside, she is less energetic and most importantly trapped in the harsh reality of older people just like the parrot that she has in a cage.
