Indian merchants and industrialists made huge profits during the First World War.

The role of merchants and industrialists in civil disobedience movement is as followed:-

(i) They became powerful in the society and wanted to expand their business. So, they started opposing colonial policies that restricted their business.

(ii) They wanted protection against imports of foreign goods and a rupee sterling foreign exchange ratio that would discourage imports.

(iii) The industrialists. criticised colonial control over the Indian economy and supported the Civil Disobedience Movement at its first stage.

(iv) They gave financial assistance and refused to buy or sell imported goods.

v) Most industrialists thought ‘Swaraj’ as a time when colonial restriction did not exist on business world, as a result trade and business would flourish without constraints .

Rich merchants and industrialists played a critical role in the civil disobedience movement.

1. After the first world war, the Indian industrialists and merchants realised that the colonial restrictions on them were not permitting them to exchange freely and make income. They wanted to be safeguarded in opposition to the import of foreign products. When the civil disobedience motion started, they participated in it as they had been keen to expand their commercial enterprise.

2. They declined to buy and promote imported products which was a good step toward civil disobedience.

3. Most traders and buyers started seeing Swaraj as a time when there might no longer be colonial business restrictions and exchange and industry could flourish with no prohibitions.

4. However, after the failure of the Round table conference, the merchants and businessmen started to back out of the motion. They were involved in the marketplace disruptions and were worried about the growing reputation of socialism among some of the younger individuals of Congress.
