A huge role. The philosophers, the musicians, the writers, the actors, painters, sculptors, and inventors all hung out with each other. When someone did something revolutionary in one of their fields, they tried to relate that to something in their own field. So, to continue to answer your question, the patrons, or ridiculously rich people, were supporting all these artists. They would commission them to write some music or poem or script or sculpt something. In one hand, the more different they made something, the better. But, if they made it too different, the patrons would find it disgusting and shun them for creating it. So most of the artists were bending their desires slightly to keep food on the table.
