The development of the Underground was criticised because underground travelling was considered risky. Many felt that it added to the mess and unhygienic conditions of the city. Also, to clear the path for the construction of the Underground, a number of houses were destroyed. This led to the displacement of a great number of London poor.

Various attempts were made to solve the housing crisis and to decongest the cities of Landon. As a re-sult, houses were built by the government. The expansion of suburbias as a part of the drive to decon-gest Landon directed the expansion of the town beyond the area where people could step to the job. Though these areas had been created, the citizens could not be pressurized to leave the cities and stay away from their places of work in the lack of transportation facilities.  The underground railway was built to solve this problem of apartments. The underground railway was criticized initially because of the following reasons:

1. This was considered a menace to health by a newspaper report.

2. Around 900 houses were destroyed to build two miles of railway.

3. This underground railway was referred to as Iron Monster, this added to the unhealthy environment and mess of the city.
