The role played by women of the imperial household in the Mughal Empire:

  • The women in the imperial household wives were distinguished based on their birth status as begams (royal family) and aghas (other wives). Begams have higher status and get more attention from their husband compared to aghas.
  • The aghacha (concubines) was positioned last in the hierarchy of females intimately related to royalty. They were provided with monthly allowances according to their status.
  • Depending on the husband's will the agha and aghacha can rise to the position of begam
  • Numerous female slaves were there in the Mughal household apart from the wives.

The role played by women of the imperial household in the Mughal Empire was quite interesting and may differ depending on the blood, royal lineage, and her personal influence on the king/sultan.

Doe example Nurjahan was the beloved wife of Zahangir and she used to exercise great power in the Kingdome.

The Harem was the place where the ladies used to stay and there the most powerful women use to reign with her status and power, which sometime may exert their power to manipulate king in the Mughal Empire
