Describe the roles of the following:

1. NaCN in the extraction of silver from a silver ore.

2. Iodine in the refining of titanium.

3. Cryolite in the metallurgy of aluminium.

1.NaCN is used to do the leaching of Ag ore in the presence of air from which the silver ore is obtained later by replacement.
4Ag+8CN(-)+2H2O+O2-->4[Ag(CN)2](-)+4OH(-)
2.Impure Ti is heated with iodine to form TiI4in vapor phase, any impurity remains in solid form and can be removed easily.  TiI4 on further heating decomposes to give Ti and I2.
3. Cryolite improves the conductivity of cell and lowers the melting point of the mixture.
