Rutherford's Model of an Atom:
- Rutherford's model is also known as Nuclear atomic model.
- Rutherford stated that an Atom consists of a heavy positively charged nucleus where all the protons and neutrons are present
- Almost whole of the mass is contributed by protons and neutrons.
- The volume of the nucleus is very small and is a minute fraction of total volume of Atom.
- There's an empty space around the nucleus which is called extra nuclear space.
- Electrons revolve around the nucleus in closed orbits with high speed.
Drawbacks:
- This model couldn't explain the stability of Atom.
- According to Maxwell, electron loses its energy continuously in the form of electromagnetic radiation. As a result e- should be losing energy while revolving around the nucleus. In this way the electron will ultimately fall in the nucleus.
- If electron looses energy continuously then it would produce a continuous spectrum. But the actual electron spectrum has well defined lines of definite frequencies.
