Rutherford's Model of an Atom:

  • Rutherford's model is also known as Nuclear atomic model.

  • Rutherford stated that an Atom consists of a heavy positively charged nucleus where all the protons and neutrons are present

  • Almost whole of the mass is contributed by protons and neutrons.

  • The volume of the nucleus is very small and is a minute fraction of total volume of Atom.

  • There's an empty space around the nucleus which is called extra nuclear space.

  • Electrons revolve around the nucleus in closed orbits with high speed.

Drawbacks:

  • This model couldn't explain the stability of Atom.

  • According to Maxwell, electron loses its energy continuously in the form of electromagnetic radiation. As a result e- should be losing energy while revolving around the nucleus. In this way the electron will ultimately fall in the nucleus.

  • If electron looses energy continuously then it would produce a continuous spectrum. But the actual electron spectrum has well defined lines of definite frequencies.
