Answer:

Ryotwari System

This system was first adopted in Madras, Carnatic and Bombay presidency. Under this system, a settlement was made between the government and the ryot (peasant) here the peasants were given the right to occupy the land they were tilling as long as they paid their customary revenue or rent to the company which was almost half of the total produce. The revenue was fixed for a maximum period of 30 years depending upon the quality of the soil and the value of the crop. This system was introduced by Thomas Murno in hope that it would bring relief to the ryots. They will have a direct contact with the government and there will be no middleman between a ryot and the government.

The British fixed the land revenue to a high rate and the peasants had to pay taxes even when their crops were destroyed. So, the peasants were often forced to take loans from the moneylenders who cheated them and often took away their lands. Though the government collected the taxes directly from the peasants but it was collected rigidly. Unable to pay the land revenue, many peasants fled to another villages or countryside and got deserted.
