Salient Features of Mahajanapadas :

>> After the 6th century BC there formed small states called as Mahajanapadas.

>> Mahajanapadas were ruled by Rajas who were Kshatriyas.

>> Each Mahajanapada had its own capital city.

>> Mahajanapadas were the just like the kingdoms which we seen after 12th century.

>> Mahajanapadas maintained strong army to protect themselves from other Mahajanapadas.

>> There were other ruling groups like Ghana which we seen in 6th century BC.

>> There were 16 Mahajanapadas during that time.

>> They were : Magadha, Kasi, Anga, Kosala, Avanti, Chedi, Vajji, Malla, Kuru, Vatsa, Panchala, Assakka, Gandhara, Surasena, Kambhoja, Machcha.

>> Magadha was the most important Mahajanapada of all.

>> Pataliputra was the capital of Magadha.

>> Ajatsatru was the first ruler of Magadha Mahajanapada.
