Answer:
good question yaa indeed
The scene of theft at Shotover Grange committed by Horace Danby was most ironic and wittily humorous.
EXPLANATION:
In the short story ‘A Question of Trust’ Horace Danby is the most peculiar character. He is well off in life with a good income yet he steals every year at one time to satisfy his habit of buying exquisite books. He plans his robberies most meticulously and is hardly ever caught.
The theft at Shotover Grange had been carefully planned by him. He had collected all the details of the house from a magazine. Fully equipped, wearing gloves to conceal his finger prints he dexterously stole towards the safe. He knew for sure that the family were out on vacation. So he didn’t mind letting out a sneeze only to be advised by a woman who he mistook to be the lady of the house. He was completely fooled by the young lady and took off his gloves to shake hands with her.
Consequently he opened the vault for her as she had claimed to have forgotten the lock code. Later he was arrested by the police on charges of robbery as the lady, a thief herself, had outsmarted him. Thus his theft at Shotover Grange was a dreadful disaster.
