Fern Quarry was a sort of rough camp on the mountain. A limestone quarry near it was long since abandoned. Three playful streams flowed there. The mountain was thickly wooded. There were huge tall oaks pines. It was a delight to lose oneself in the green hollows of that tanged wood. The small rooms were arranged on each side of a long open hall. Round the house was a piazza. At the back door there was a big butternut tree. In the evening by the campfire, men played cards told stories of their wonderful feats with foul, fish etc. They also told their hunting experience.
