Buds on the trees finally open up after having slept all winter. Leaves burst out of the buds in fresh green colour when the sun gets brighter and warmer. In spring, the trees’ bare branches change into leafy shade towards summer.

Summer is known as ‘été’ in French, from the Latin word ‘aestas’ (meaning ‘time of the heat’). Driving on the roads of rural France will reveal a multitude of beautiful flowers blooming in fields, meadows and forests all over the country.

Winter in France is often considered as the least popular season for tourism in the country. This is a coldest season of the year when the weather, gloomy and rough, forces the vegetation into a well earned pause. Trees are leafless, their trunks of a darkish-grey colour, and depending on the sky, snow and ice cover entire regions, disrupting human activity. Once the cheerful Christmas and New Year’s celebrations have gone, the long months of January and February are not a season one particularly anticipates in Europe. However they are many light-hearted celebrations and events happening to cheer everyone up.

In 2017, Autumn officially starts on 22 September in Europe, the date of the Autumn equinox and ends on 21 December. For meteorologists and many French people, Autumn runs from approximately 1 September to the end of November. Although the last month of the year, December is often thought to be part of Winter because cold and snow occur throughout the country.
