Ecological succession is the gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time. Nothing remains the same and habitats are constantly changing. There are two main types of succession, primary and secondary.

Primary succession is the series of community changes which occur on an entirely new habitat which has never been colonized before. For example, a newly quarried rock face or sand dunes.

Secondary succession is the series of community changes which take place on a previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat. For example, after felling trees in a woodland, land clearance or a fire.

Ecological succession is the process of establishment of new community at an area which had been uninhabited.

The sequential processes of succession in an ecosystem are-

Nudation: Nudation is the development of bare site which is uninhabited by organisms. It occurs due to soil erosion, wind action, storm, biotic etc. In this area only autotrophic organisms can sustain by utilizing inorganic substrates. Thus, there is an inhabitation of new species favourable to that environmental conditions. Example: The acidic substances secreated by lichen helps in break down of rocks into soil.

Migration: This process helps in the establishment of species by the arrival of seeds, spores or other reproductive propagules.

Aggregation: It is the process in which one species replace the other species and increase their population.

Competition: There is a competition  ( intra as well as interspecific competition) between different species in search of food, water, shelter etc.
