ACT 1 SCENE 1. THE FIRST ACT OF SHAKESPEARE'S THE MERCHANT OF THE VENICE OPEN IN THE VENICE . ANTONIO, A MERCHANT WHO ON SEVERAL CARGO SHIPS, IS TALKING ABOUT A SADNESS THAT HE FEELS HE CANNOT EXPLAIN . .... THERE IS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN BELMONT , BASSANIO TELLS ANTENNA, WHOSE FATHER WAS KING.

THE FATHER WAS DIED, LEAVING ALL IS WEALTH TO HIS DAUGHTER, PORTIA . SUITORS , WISHING TO BECOME PORTIA'S WIFE , ARE LINING UP AT HER DOOR, HOPING TO WIN HER HAND. HOWEVER, THE FIRST MUST GAS A RIDDLE THAT PORTIA'S FATHER HAS DEVISED.

Bassanio need the money to buy buy new clothes in order to make a good impression and to save the belmonte and try his luck in figuring out the puzzle and thus winnings the beautiful and rich PORTIA .

Antonio replies that he would do anything for bassanio. however all antinodes money is tied up in his shift. He gives bassaino signed flip of paper and tells him to go out and see if he can gain credit in Antonio name .

THIS SCENE ESTABLISHED THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANTONIO AND THE BASSAINO AND ALSO SET UP THE EVENT THAT WILL OCCUR AS A CONSEQUENCE OF ANTONIO AND BASSANIO ACTION.
