That pressure is called atmospheric pressure, or air pressure. It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth. Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer. In a barometer, a column of mercury in a glass tube rises or falls as the weight of the atmosphere changes.

Atmospheric pressure primarily hold us in shape. If this pressure disappeared suddenly we would start expanding due to the air inside our body and burst.

Also the blood in our arteries would surge to the surface of our skin as the blood pressure 120/80 mm of Hg is so regulated that it is lower then the atmospheric pressure 760 mm Hg.

Answer:

Significance of atmospheric pressure

Atmospheric pressure has important effects on water chemistry and weather conditions. It affects the amount of gas that can dissolve in water. More gas, such as oxygen, can dissolve in water under higher pressure when compared to lower air pressure
