Answer:

Mostly semantics, but Sociologists seem to focus more on Human individual behavior within groups whereas Anthoapologists mostly tell us how great we are. If you would like an -ology which will actually inform you regarding the Human condition, then it is Ethology that you want but requires a lot more preparatory work because Ethology is almost ALL the understanding of context, and of being able to regard us as we regard the Baboon and this last is WAY harder than you might think because to truly see it you have to integrate it into your personal identity. One of the best ways I have found to inspire acute cognitive dissonance within myself has been to try to fully integrate my Human Identity (nonverbal self-perception) with that of a monkey. This can only be done in the tiniest of steps and understanding the structural (physical) and behavioral elements of absolute congruency between us and all other life is necessary to help us hack our way out of the historical lies, misperceptions, and untrue ‘truths’ to determine our behavior as adults programmed into us over our first years onplanet which create our sense of identity and collective Human Reality today and which, when we add in contradictory data which wants to shift our perceptual equilibrium, creates a disequilibrium which we will, here, call ‘cognitive dissonance’, an extremely unpleasant sense until you learn to love it as a signal of serious misunderstanding in your own perceptions, the worst of all sins. It’s real and is part of what keeps you YOU, believing what you have always believed, behaving as you have always behaved. As for the similarities between Anthropology and Sociology, what difference does it make? Navel gazing. We cannot understand ourselves from the ‘inside’. Ethology is the Way. Follow the Path of Ethodō but be prepared to become personally smaller and less important than you can now possibly imagine. And its okay because it’s the truth. And in the last fifty years we have mapped enough of the Universe to completely define our simple asses without once referring to a distinctly Human uniqueness except for two, hierarchical, fear dominated social structure and its resultant, our social cannibalism of identity group upon identity group which has not changed a hair in the 6000 years we’ve been taking written note. But ourselves are hard to see at first because what we are used to becomes invisible to us and ‘normal’. Mass murder is our ‘normal’. Can YOU explain that? Study Ethology and natural selection. The ‘best’ doesn’t always ‘win’. And that’s us in a nutshell.
