The upper middle class had joined the elite, but the rest of the middle class remained the same. There was also a new white-collar middle class that were salespeople and secretaries. ... The middle class was expanding, and the upper elite was growing.

By the late 19th century, all kinds of people lived in the cities. Labourers and servants were the most numerous. Although some became better-off, many were still poor. They lived in cramped, decaying houses, known as slums.
