Social economic reforms introduced by Gandhi in Champaran village:
Champaran Satyagraha was the first Satyagraha movement led by Gandhi in 1917. This satyagraha was conducted to address the desperate condition of the farmers in the Champaran village. The farmers of Champaran village are forced to cultivate Indigo rather than food crops by the European planters. So some peasants called Mahatma Gandhi to look after the misery. Gandhi organised a protest called Champaran Satyagraha. The social and economic reforms introduced by Gandhi in Champaran village include the following.
- He started the Satyagraha against the European Indigo planters as it destroys the productivity of the land.
- Gandhiji witnessed the miserable conditions of the peasants who were oppressed by the European peasants.
- He established an ashram there and appointed Rajendra Prasad to work for the villagers.
- It was a non violent peaceful movement.
- He refused to comply the orders of the district officers when asked to call off the movement.
- As a result Gandhiji was arrested.
- But, he didn't leave the movement.
- As a result of the movement, a law was passed to protect the farmers of the Champaran village from the Indigo planters.
