In the Old Regime, there were 3 estates in France.
The 1st estate was made up of the clergy, who were people who performed special functions for the church.
The 2nd estate was made up of nobles. Nobles were very wealthy.
The 3rd estate was made up of the 'common people'. However, in the 3rs estate itself, there were certain divisions. There were well-to-do businessmen and traders, to poor peasants and labourers who struggled to have 2 square meals per day.
Although peasants made up 90% of the population, 60% of the land in France was owned by the church, the nobles, and the richer 3rd estate.
One important privelege that the clergy and nobility enjoyed by birth was that they did not need to pay taxes. Only the 3rd estate had to pay taxes.
