The society wasdivided into three levels or estates :

The First Estate consisted of the clergy , They lived a life of luxury as they had to pay no taxes but instead collected a tax tithe. The second Estate consisted of the nobility , They too lived a life of luxury and also paid no taxes And moreover had important positions in the Government .

The third estate consisted of the Pleabians . Their lives were the most miserable ones as they had to pay three types of taxes ; one to the state , one to the church or clergy and one to the landlords.
